Free Parent Training

Head Start hosts free training for parents of toddlers

HANDLINGKnox County Head Start announces “Handling Your Toddler’s Fussing and Fits,” a free parenting training for expectant parents and parents of infants and toddlers, provided with funding support from the United Way of Knox County. The two-hour session will be held on Tuesday, April 14, 6-8 p.m. at New Hope Early Education Center located at 11700 Upper Gilchrist Road in Mount Vernon.

Disciplining a toddler or two-year old can be very challenging. Babies grow to be more independent and sometimes exert this independence in ways for which parents are often unprepared. Often, a toddler’s strong feelings are expressed through tantrums and power struggles. In this interactive training, parents will learn how to handle the “fussing and the fits” by learning about what typical toddler behavior looks like, ways to avoid engaging in power struggles, and how to set up your toddler and yourself for success as you navigate this developmental stage together.

This training is provided by Renee Sutherland, LISW-S and Certified Conscious Discipline Trainer. She serves as the child mental health coordinator at Knox County Head Start, training parents to “be the best they can be.” She has provided parent trainings since 2005 and most recently has trained the past several years for National Head Start in Dallas, Kansas City and Nashville. As part of the National Head Start Center of Excellence program, Sutherland has trained Head Start and early childhood education staff throughout Ohio and in several other states. She has trained with Buckley Air Force Base Child Development Centers in Denver, Colo., the Indiana and Ohio Associations for Education of Young Children, the Ohio Head Start Leadership Conference for six years where she trained child care staff in Conscious Discipline, and has presented in Washington, D.C., at the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
